About this blog
Fairlight Works was first set up when I returned to narrow gauge railway modelling after a break of several years, to document the construction of an OO9 (4mm:ft scale on 9mm gauge track) layout set at Fairlight around the Kent/Sussex border on the south coast of England. The concept was inspired by the High Weald Light Railway, which was the background to an O16.5 (7mm:ft scale on 16.5mm gauge track) layout called Hawkhurst, built in the 1990s by Dave Holman. When the opportunity came up in 2009 to buy the successor to Hawkhurst, Cranbrook Town, it was too good to pass up and I attempted to shift scales.
That was the theory at least - but as you will see from reading the entries I have a tendency to waver back towards OO9 and even 5.5mm:ft scale, and I also cover visits to preserved narrow gauge railways and model exhibitions.
Cranbrook is now permanently set up in my office (I work as a freelance web developer) and progress - admittedly slow - is being made on its refurbishment.

Roco vs Hunslet revival
It’s another of those projects that has spent longer in the bits box than on the workbench, but as my OO9 pipeline dries up (i.e. I’ve now done all the easy ones) I’ve started to look again at the union … Continue reading
Running repairs to the blog
With some trepidation, I’ve upgraded the blog’s template to Blogger’s new ‘layouts’ format and hopefully everything is still working right. The main reason for doing this was the new ‘blog list’ feature which tracks all the other blogs I link … Continue reading
…then two turn up at once
Continuing with “Unofficial Outside Frame Chassis Week” it was announced at the N Gauge Society AGM at the weekend that Graham Farish will be releasing an all-new class 08 model with… outside frames. This replaces the previous generation version which … Continue reading
Outside frame development
This is version 2 of the outside frame patterns for Blanche. It’s turning out to be a bit of a trial and error operation to get everything lined up and in the right place but I’m still reasonably confident this … Continue reading
Ricket Rescue, or Bullant in a Blanche
Since returning to railway modelling a couple of years ago I’ve been trying (albeit not very hard!) to work out the best way of giving my old 009 model of the Penhryn/Ffestiniog loco Blanche prototypical outside frames. The original build … Continue reading
