About this blog
Fairlight Works was first set up when I returned to narrow gauge railway modelling after a break of several years, to document the construction of an OO9 (4mm:ft scale on 9mm gauge track) layout set at Fairlight around the Kent/Sussex border on the south coast of England. The concept was inspired by the High Weald Light Railway, which was the background to an O16.5 (7mm:ft scale on 16.5mm gauge track) layout called Hawkhurst, built in the 1990s by Dave Holman. When the opportunity came up in 2009 to buy the successor to Hawkhurst, Cranbrook Town, it was too good to pass up and I attempted to shift scales.
That was the theory at least - but as you will see from reading the entries I have a tendency to waver back towards OO9 and even 5.5mm:ft scale, and I also cover visits to preserved narrow gauge railways and model exhibitions.
Cranbrook is now permanently set up in my office (I work as a freelance web developer) and progress - admittedly slow - is being made on its refurbishment.

Narrow Gauge Midlands
On show at Narrow Gauge Midlands / the 009 Society AGM yesterday was a new ready-to-run chassis by N-Drive Productions designed specifically for 009 kits – intended to replace all those old N-gauge mechanisms that are so hard to buy … Continue reading

The Bullants are now back from their return visit to Australia with pivoting mounting bolsters fixed, so huge thanks to Geoff at Hollywood Foundry for all his help sorting them out. As I mentioned before, the power bogie runs very … Continue reading
Slight setback
While the Bullant runs fantastically well it turns out I ordered the bogies with the wrong kind of bolster mounting (fixed not swivelling). Although this was entirely my fault, Geoff at the Hollywood Foundry has very kindly offered to modify … Continue reading
Big Beast gets power
My Bullant power bogies arrived today – built to order and delivered from Australia in exactly a week, for a very reasonable price. Now how’s that for service? The Lxd2 kit is designed to use the bogies and motor from … Continue reading
The Big Beast
A new arrival this weekend is the kit for a Polish Lxd2 diesel, from Poland, brokered through a kind fellow member of the 009 Society. It’s a frankly terrifying maze of nickel-silver etches with no instructions* and nothing to make … Continue reading
